Boswell makes triumphant return
Gary Denvir reports

The former world number four Stewart Boswell claimed victory in the South Island Championships in Christchurch, despite spending the last 18 months on the sidelines with a crippling back injury.

The 26-year-old from Canberra was only in the draw as a qualifier, but proved too good for top seeded New Zealander Kashif Shuja in the final, winning 11/8 11/4 11/4.

Boswell says he's just rapt to have lasted the full distance.

"I wasn't sure how my match fitness would hold up after being out for so long, so to win is a real bonus. Thankfully, I won all of my early round matches in straight games, so I had a bit of energy saved up for the final."

The extra puff proved vital, with the Australian pushed hard in the early stages of the decider.

"It was pretty tight in the opening game, but I managed to start exerting some control in the second game, and from then on I felt pretty good."

Shuja was anything but downheatered at his defeat to Boswell. The kiwi number one says the match provided good insight into what to expect when he joins the world circuit full time next year.

"Stewart was in a different league to what I'm used to facing, but I'm encouraged by how competitive I was. The first game was really close, but unfortunately the 90 minute battle I had in the semis caught up with me, and I ran out of steam".

Shuja says he's hoping for a rematch at the South Island Classic in Invercargill next weekend. "I've definitely learned a few things from today's final. Stewart plays a lot faster game than I do, but if I can slow him down, I may be able to get a bit closer next time around".

Meanwhile, a qualifier has also taken the women's WISPA World Tour event.

Canterbury's Sarah Cook outlasted fellow kiwi Jaclyn Hawkes in the decider, winning 9/1 7/9 4/9 9/3 9/0.

Like Shuja, fourth seeded Hawkes appeared to suffer from a dose of fatigue after winning a gruelling semifinal in five games yesterday afternoon.

BOZZA'S BACK ...

"I'd been getting some pain in my lower back and decided to go back to Australia from there to sort it out. Initially, with all scans of my back showing no damage, it didn't seem that serious. However it never improved to the stage that I could play.

"I've spent most of the time over the last two years between the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) in Brisbane and living with my parents in Canberra. During this time I saw various physios, doctors and spinal specialists - without any real success.

"Things were looking pretty bleak after about a year without playing and no real signs of progress. This was probably the hardest and most frustrating period - not really knowing what the problem was, if it would get better and if I was going to get the chance to play again.

"One of the last people I planned to see was a Physio (Steve Saunders) in Adelaide, who I'd heard was doing some further study on the dysfunction of the area I was getting the pain. He had some different techniques and a different approach treating my problem.

"Things slowly started looking up after spending two months there, going into Steve's practice most days either to have treatment or Pilates/stability exercises. I was then able to progress to harder work - running, gym, etc - before finally getting back to playing. I've been back training in Brisbane for the last few months as well as doing regular trips back to Adelaide."

"Right now, it's just such a good feeling to be back playing and doing what I've wanted to do for the last two years. And, yes, Steve Saunders has definitely made it onto my Christmas card list!"

Boswell one win away ...
Gary Denvir reports

Stewart Boswell, the former world number four, has shaken off 18 months on the sidelines with a crippling back injury to reach the final of the South Island Championships in Christchurch. Boswell cruised into the decider with an 11/4 11/2 11/3 victory over New Zealand's Campbell Grayson in the semis. Earlier in the day, he disposed of Egypt's Omar Mosaad 11/6 11/3 11/4 in the quarterfinals.

Boswell will face top seed Kashif Shuja in the final. The kiwi number one also had a reasonably straight forward win in the quarters, beating fellow kiwi Josh Greenfield 11/9 11/6 11/10. However, Shuja had to fight a lot harder in the semis, bouncing back from two games down to beat Australia's Steve Finitsis 9/11 9/11 11/5 11/4 11/8.

Seedings have meant very little in the WISPA women's draw.

Top seeded Australian Dianne Desira bowed out in the quarterfinals, beaten 9/6 9/7 9/5 by New Zealand's Lara Petera. However, Petera was then pipped for a place in the final by fellow kiwi, and fourth seed Jackie Hawkes, losing the five set battle 9/7 9/6 1/9 5/9 9/1.

Hawkes will meet kiwi qualifier Sarah Cook in the decider. Cook swept into the last two with a clinical 9/6 9/2 9/5 victory over Tricia Chuah from Malaysia.

15-Apr, Round One & Two:
Sound Start for Bozza
Gary Denvir reports

Australian Stewart Boswell made it two wins from two at the South Island Championships in Christchurch.

The former world number four is safely through to the quarterfinals of the tournament, after battling to an 11/4 11/8 11/5 win over New Zealand's Martin Knight in the second round. It's Boswell's first tournament on the PSA World Tour in 18 months, after being sidelined with a crippling back injury.

Top seed Kashif Shuja is also through to the last eight. The kiwi number one edged to a 11/8 11/9 11/10 victory over Australia's Bradley Freeme, taking the third game tie-break 2-0. And second seed Wai Hang Wong from Hong Kong's joined them in the quarters, with a straight games win over Malaysia's Kim Lee Wong.

In the women's WISPA World Tour event, Australian top seed Dianne Desira made short work of New Zealand's Kylie Lindsay first up, strolling to a 9/2 9/2 9/4 victory. But second seed Christina Mak from Hong Kong had to bounce back from a slow start to beat Australia's Rachel Smith 0/9 9/1 9/4 9/5.
