DARE becomes SAL
For the past 11 years SBAC has held a Men's Professional squash tournament
in aid of the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department DARE (Drug Abuse
Resistance Education) program.
In that time we have donated over $450,000
to DARE just from the tournament.
The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department has recently replaced their DARE
program with The Sheriff's Activity League (SAL) which provides
extra-curricular activities for under-privileged “at risk” kids - we hope
to add squash to this program in the near future.
This year's Tournament starts on August 11th with all the proceeds
benefiting SAL. There will also be all the usual amateur divisions and
festivities associated with this great event.

Well-earned rest for Razik

Razik Outlasts Galvez
In the longest match on record since the introduction of scoring to
eleven, Canada's Shahier Razik claimed the 2005 Santa Barbara
title, beating Mexican Eric Galvez in two hours and twelve minutes.
The tournament had already featured several lengthy matches, but the final
provided the ultimate value for money for the appreciative California
crowd.
Razik played the same metronomical steady slow paced game that won him his
semi-final against Shawn De Lierre, retrieving many apparent "winners",
and keeping Galvez deep in the court, except when he used his backhand
drop shot to move him forward occasionally.
Galvez took the ball early, always trying to increase the pace, hitting
some great shots.
The first two games four games shared, with Razik twice taking the lead
and lots of let balls discussions with the referee.
Eventually after over 2 hours Galvez got tired and a few more errors crept
in to his game. Razik just kept on going with the same tactics - amazing
stuff.

13-Aug, Semi-Finals:
Razik and Galvez in
Santa Barbara Final ...
Robert Graham on
the semis ...
The final of the Santa Barbara Open will be contested by the top two
seeds, Shahier Razik and Eric Galvez, after both completed
straight-game semi-final victories in California.
Razik
played a very steady, slow paced game, retrieving everything Australian
third seed Timothy Manning hit.
Manning stepped up the court, increased pace, and attacked more
aggressively after the first game but Razik still got to everything. As
Manning got frustrated with this, more errors crept into his game as he
looked for ways to hit winners without much luck.
Galvez
faced the young Indian Saurav Ghosal, and the pair delighted
the crowd with their incredibly quick movement around the court, great
shot-playing, and touch at the front of the court. The difference was
Galvez's ability to take the ball a little earlier, and the greater
experience he showed at crucial times as he ran out the winner.
Galvez will be appearing in his fifth PSA final, while for Razik it
represents number fifteen.
12-Aug, Quarters:
Seeds Succeed in
Santa Barbara ...
The
top four seeds will contest the semi-finals in Santa Barbara, after
Canada's Shawn De Lierre fell short in a second successive marathon.
De Lierre needed 99 minutes to reach the quarter-finals, where he met
compatriot and top seed Shahier Razik. This time the match was even
longer, at 155 minutes, but after taking the first game De Lierre finally
succumbed as Razik took the next three games.
Australian
third seed Tim Manning ended home interest as he beat Chris Gordon
in straight games to set up a semi-final meeting with Razik.
The other semi-final will be between Indian Saurav Ghosal and
Mexican Eric Galvez, both winning their quarter-finals in straight
games.
11-Aug, First Round:
De Lierre Survives
Santa Barbara Marathon
Canada's
Shawn De Lierre survived a 99-minute marathon in the first round to
set up a quarter-final clash with compatriot and top seed Shahier Razik
in the established PSA Tour event in California, USA
In a match featuring three tie-break games, the Montreal-based seventh
seed beat Pakistan's Kumail Mehmood 10-11 11-9 11-10 10-11 11-7 in the
longest first round match of the day, while Razik beat the USA's Beau
River in a third of that time.
Fifth seed Christopher Gordon led local interest in the event with
a straight games victory over fellow American Dylan Patterson. The New
York-born 19-year-old prevailed in 38 minutes and now meets Australia's
No3 seed Timothy Manning for a place in the last four.
Second seed Eric Galvez enjoyed a walkover against tournament
director Robert Graham, and the Mexican meets Canada's David Phillips
in the quarters.
