Kiwis rule in Somerton

There will be a New Zealand winner of the Women's South Australia Open, after Jacklyn Hawkes and Louise Crome both produced seeding upsets in the semi-finals.

Hawkes came from two games down to beat Australia's top seed Amelia Pittock in 69 minutes, while upset Aussie rising star Kasey Brown in four games.

In the men's semi-finals Cameron Pilley cruised to a straight-games win over Tim Manning, and will meet English third seed Ben Garner, who recovered from a first-game loss to defeat Jason Mudge.

Garner Gatecrashes SA Semis

England's third seed Ben Garner is the only non-Australian to reach the semi-finals of the South Australia Open in Somerton.

Garner beat Wade Johnstone, who upset Hong Kong number one Wai Hang Wong in the first round, and now meets another Australian, Jason Mudge, who beat qualifier Steve Finitsis in 64 minutes, exactly twice as long as Garner's match.

Top seed Cameron Pilley scored a second consecutive straight games win, over namesake Cameron White, and now meets fifth seed Timothy Manning, who beat yesterday's marathon upset hero Simon Carruthers.

Both women's semi-finals are Australia v New Zealand affairs, with Amelia Pittock taking on Jaclyn Hawkes and Kasey Brown facing Louise Crome.

Hi Fram,

Well yesterday was a bad day for the seeded players, with 4 of the top 8 seeds not making it through the first round.

It started when Stephane Galifi, the 2 seed, withdrew from the event - unfortunately too late for anyone to replace him in the draw.

The biggest upset was no.4 seed Khasif Shuja losing to Simon Carruthers in a long battle, 12-10 in the 5th.

We're playing in a small, friendly club in Gelnegl, Adelaide. The courts have chipboard floors which I've not experienced before, but they seem to be playing ok!
